Study: Latino immigrants have a high workplace injury rate

California’s workforce includes many immigrants. While suffering an injury at work can be a worrisome experience for anyone, it could trigger some special worries and concerns for immigrant workers. In such a situation, it can be very important for an immigrant, whether they are here in the U.S under a legal status or are undocumented, to have a firm understanding of what their rights are and what kind of compensation they can pursue. Skilled workers’ comp attorneys can give immigrants here in California guidance on workplace injury matters.

Immigrants can end up facing some significant workplace injury risks on the job. A recent study indicates that Latino immigrant workers have a particularly high likelihood of work injuries.

Researchers from the University of Southern California conducted this study. Using survey data from the past couple of decades, the study compared the work injury rates of different demographic groups here in the United States.

One of the demographic groups it looked at were foreign-born Latino workers. The study found this group to have an especially high workplace injury rate. The rate was particularly high among male Latino immigrants. Foreign-born Latino men between the ages of 18 and 64 were found to have a work injury rate of 13.7 injuries for every 1,000 workers, a higher rate than any of the other demographic groups the study looked at.

What do you think is contributing to the high level of workplace injuries among Latino immigrants? What do you see as the biggest workplace safety risks this group is facing?
